The scarlet letter assignmentsTSL Journal conversations.
Students will respond to journal prompts that I post on Google Classroom throughout the unit. Each student is responsible for directly answering the question I pose by expressing a credible opinion and supporting it with relevant textual evidence (including a citation), and then thoughtfully responding to another student's post. When you respond to the student, I expect you to address the student by name, and be respectful in your responses. It is fine to disagree, but do so respectfully. Patrick Henry introduced his very famous Speech to the Second Virginia Convention by showing that one can passionately disagree with previously expressed sentiment while still acknowledging that the other person has a right to his or her opinion. Note: It is fine to respond to a student post even if another student has already done so; often, discourse can be far deeper in a thread that has a lot of activity. However, be careful that your response is unique. Do not allow your response to mimic (either directly or indirectly) someone else's post. Similarly, do not simply agree or disagree. Responses to student posts should bring up new questions, encourage consideration of a differing viewpoint, teach something new, or otherwise allow for deeper understanding of the subject at hand.
